Command Sergeant Major (Retired) Steven W. Comerford Sr. was the uncle of MAJ (Ret) Richard “Rick” Comerford (D-3778 Life) who is a Charter Member of Chapter XLVIII.
CSM Comerford (D-725) died on 21 My 2004 at the Rhode Island Veterans Home, Bristol, RI.
He served with the 1st, 5th and 8th Special Forces Groups in Okinawa, Japan, Republic of Vietnam and Panama. He was the recipient of numerous awards and decorations to include the Distinguished Service Cross, the Bronze Star with two oakleaf clusters, the Purple Heart with two oakleaf clusters and the Combat Infantryman Badge. He is mentioned in the book Uncommon Valor written by Stephen L. Moore.
After he retired from Special Forces, he became the Director of Security for the Defense Language Institute, Presidio of Monterey, California.
He was the husband of the late Edna Comerford. He lived with his late brother, Richard M. Comerford Sr. for many years prior to moving to the RI Veterans Home due to ill health.
He is survived by his son, Steven W. Comerford Jr., two nephews, MAJ (Ret) Richard M. Comerford Jr., Michael P. Comerford and a niece, Kathleen Comerford Searle.
He was buried on 17 June 2004 in Arlington National Cemetery, Section 64, Grave 3571.
