Captain Ronald Marcel Goulet was born on 13 January 1946. He lived in Slatersville (North Smithfield) RI prior to the family moving to Enfield, CT. He graduated from Enfield High School in 1964. He graduated from Infantry Officer Candidate School, Fort Benning, GA in 1966 and completed the Special Forces Officer Course January 1967. He served with the 8th Special Forces Group (Airborne) 1967-1968. In November 1968, he was assigned to CCC, MACV-SOG, 5th SF Gp(A) UASRV. In September 1969, Captain Goulet led a Hatchet Force mission that was taken under ground fire upon insertion into Cambodia. One of the Kingbee helicopters was knocked down on the LZ. CPT Goulet fearlessly raced forward to rescue SSG Mike Sheppard from the burning chopper. The Hatched Force skirmished with the NVA squads for the next two days. CPT Goulet’s men had captured an enemy ammunition stockpile and were redeploying for a counterattack when an RPG rocket detonated at his feet causing severe chest, face and hand injuries. He died on 26 September 1969 in the Medivac helicopter halfway back to Dak To. He is buried in St. Bernard’s Cemetery, Enfield, CT.
