Major Charles W. Reynolds was born on 27 August 1922 born in Providence, son of the late William and Alice (Wood) Reynolds. He served during WWII in the US Army Air Corps as a Staff Sergeant with the 453d Bomber Squadron. On 10 July 1950 he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant of Artillery RI Army National Guard. He was assigned to the 243d AAA Bn and the 705th AAA Bn, RIARNG.
The Artillery dominated State Headquarters was unsure and anxious about the new Special Forces Company that was recently activated. Major Reynolds was one of the officers assigned to the unit to provide adult supervision. He was assigned to Company D, 16th SF Gp, RIARNG on 1 May 1962. He served as the Executive Officer until 16 April 1970. Although he had no desire to become Airborne of SF qualified, he performed the duties of XO in a commendable manner, serving under several commanders.
He passed away September 15, 2009. He was the husband of Mary E. Reynolds (Astbury) for 60 years. He was. He lived in Warwick, R.I. for 37 years, before moving to Sebring, FL. He was a manager for New England Telephone for 37 years prior to retiring in 1983. . Besides his wife he was survived by his sons, Terry A. Reynolds of Phuket, Thailand, Steven C. Reynolds of South Kingstown and Richard W. Reynolds of Phuket; four grand-children; and a great-grandchild.
Major Reynolds’ cremains were interred in the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery with several members of Chapter 48, SFA in attendance.
